🏰 The 1998 vintage in 布根地 (Burgundy) for red wines was initially met with negative assessments, but in bottle, it became clear that while patchy, it could be excellent, offering deep color and ample structure. The Côte de Nuits, where Emmanuel Rouget is a prominent producer, was expected to yield the greatest wines. The year was characterized by thick skins, leading to good colors but often tough and stolid wines, with some having dry tannins. However, many wines also showed good acidity and concentration. Emmanuel Rouget, known for his rigorous viticultural practices and low-yield philosophy inherited from his legendary uncle Henri Jayer, consistently produces high-end Pinot Noir.
Emmanuel Rouget's Bourgogne Rouge typically offers dense fruit and is well-balanced with earthy notes. While specific tasting notes for the 1998 vintage are scarce, general characteristics of the vintage suggest wines with deep color, gorgeous fruit often shaded to black, a little spice, excellent concentration, and very good acidity. The Achilles heel for many 1998s was their tannin, which could be dry, especially on the finish. However, Rouget's meticulous approach often mitigates such issues, aiming for purity of fruit and exceptional cellaring potential.
🍴 This mature red 布根地 (Burgundy) would pair beautifully with classic French dishes like Coq au Vin or Boeuf Bourguignon. For a more contemporary or Eastern twist, consider roasted duck with five-spice or a rich mushroom hotpot.
🥂 This 1998 Emmanuel Rouget Bourgogne is ideal for a sophisticated dinner party or a quiet evening of contemplation, especially for those who appreciate the evolution of mature 布根地 (Burgundy) Pinot Noir. It's a testament to a producer's skill in a challenging vintage. While not an ancient wine, its age suggests careful handling. Ensure the bottle is stored upright for a few days before opening to allow any sediment to settle. Decanting for 30-60 minutes can help the wine open up and separate it from any natural deposits. Serve at cellar temperature, around 16-18°C.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Emmanuel Rouget was founded in 1985 in Burgundy, France. The wines produced by the estate quickly gained a legendary status among collectors worldwide. The winery is located in Flagey-Echézeaux. In addition to Pinot Noir, Emmanuel Rouget also uses Gamay for winemaking and produces high-quality white wines from Aligoté in the Burgundy region. Emmanuel Rouget is considered a successor to Henri Jayer's winemaking philosophy, adhering to the "non-interventionist" approach from cultivation to production.
