🏰The 1996 Rene Engel Echezeaux Grand Cru is a testament to an excellent Burgundy vintage, marked by 【climatic serendipity and meticulous cultivation】. This deep ruby elixir, from a year where early life showed a structured backbone of tannins and acidity promising longevity, has handsomely fulfilled that prophecy. The bouquet is a complex symphony of ripe cherries, ethereal violets, and a whisper of earthy truffles, evolving into earthy, mushroomy sweet bing cherries with hints of spices and the gorgeous funk of older Burgundy. On the palate, it can be velvety, with savory sous bois earth, weathered minerals, sour red cherries, and deep red plums, supported by fine tannins and refreshing acidity. The finish is long and lovely, leaving a haunting impression.
🍴 This elegant Pinot Noir is recommended with duck, goose, and game birds. It also pairs beautifully with sauteed partridge on sylt lingon.
🥂 An archive of history, this wine is an excellent choice for discerning collectors and special occasions, particularly for those who appreciate the profound evolution of older Burgundy. For a 1996 vintage, expect a developed profile with tertiary aromas. The condition of the cork and capsule is crucial for older bottles, so handle with care.
BACKGROUND
Domaine René Engel was a Burgundy producer known for making some of the top examples of Pinot Noir in Vosne-Romanée, France. The domaine remained in the Engel family for three generations until the death of Philippe Engel in 2005. The domaine's vineyard holdings spanned a total of around six hectares. In 2006, René Engel's vineyard holdings were purchased by François Pinault, owner of the renowned Château Latour, and Domaine d'Eugenie was formed.
