🏰 The 1962 Rene Engel Vosne Romanee is a 【rare, historic vintage from the legendary René Engel, 'the Professor'】, offering a unique glimpse into the classicism of 1962 Burgundy. The 1962 vintage in Burgundy was considered 'wonderful' for both red and white wines, with a slow start to the growing season but ultimately full ripeness after a late October harvest. René Engel was renowned for his scientific approach and meticulous cleanliness in winemaking. This particular bottle, at over 60 years old, has been described as having a ruddy garnet appearance with a coppery rim, earthy notes, volatile acidity, and hints of leather. The palate is sweet and full, with a lovely sweetness and fullness of fruit, leading to a very long and delightful finish, typical of Engel's style from that era. Some notes also mention a 'tea-like but almost perfectly clean' character.
🍴 Given its age and potential earthy, savory notes, this wine would be best enjoyed with classic pairings for aged red Burgundy, such as roasted game birds, mushroom dishes, truffle-infused cuisine, or simply savored on its own to appreciate its evolved complexity.
🥂 This is a very rare and historic bottle, ideal for a truly exceptional celebration or a focused tasting for connoisseurs who appreciate the nuances of mature wines. Expect bottle variation due to age. To serve, stand the bottle upright for several days or weeks to allow sediment to settle. Decant with extreme care, if at all, for a very short period (30-60 minutes) to separate sediment, as very old wines can be fragile. Serve at cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F).
BACKGROUND
Domaine René Engel was a Burgundy producer known for making some of the top examples of Pinot Noir in Vosne-Romanée, France. The domaine remained in the Engel family for three generations until the death of Philippe Engel in 2005. The domaine's vineyard holdings spanned a total of around six hectares. In 2006, René Engel's vineyard holdings were purchased by François Pinault, owner of the renowned Château Latour, and Domaine d'Eugenie was formed.
