🏰The 2000 vintage in Burgundy was generally excellent for Pinot Noir, producing wines with concentrated sugars and ripened tannins, offering both richness and finesse. Domaine Rene Engel, though no longer in operation under that name, was renowned for crafting soulful and individualistic red Burgundies. Their Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru wines are particularly noted for their elegant clarity and precision, evolving beautifully in the cellar.
🍴This magnificent Grand Cru Burgundy demands equally refined food pairings. Think classic French dishes like roasted duck breast with cherry sauce, coq au vin, or mushroom-based dishes like truffle risotto. It also pairs wonderfully with aged Comté or Gruyère cheese. For an Asian pairing, consider delicate Cantonese roasted pigeon or a refined braised abalone dish.
🥂An exceptional wine for a milestone celebration or a serious Burgundy tasting. It is drinking beautifully now, showcasing its maturity and complexity, but well-stored bottles can continue to offer pleasure for several more years. Serve at 16-18°C (60-64°F) and consider decanting for 1-2 hours to allow its full bouquet to emerge.
BACKGROUND
Domaine René Engel was a Burgundy producer known for making some of the top examples of Pinot Noir in Vosne-Romanée, France. The domaine remained in the Engel family for three generations until the death of Philippe Engel in 2005. The domaine's vineyard holdings spanned a total of around six hectares. In 2006, René Engel's vineyard holdings were purchased by François Pinault, owner of the renowned Château Latour, and Domaine d'Eugenie was formed.
