FEATURES
🏰 The 1979 vintage in 布根地 saw a cold spring followed by warmer weather in May, leading to a good start for flowering. Despite a severe local storm in June that minimized crop sizes in Vosne-Romanée, the harvest at the end of September yielded fine, elegant wines. This Cathiard Molinier Romanée St Vivant Grand Cru 1979, from a producer sometimes labeled as Andre Cathiard or Cathiard-Molinier in older vintages, is a testament to the enduring quality of Grand Cru 布根地. While just past its absolute peak, it continues to show remarkably well, revealing complexity and freshness after a few minutes in the glass. The bouquet offers delicate fruit notes, sous-bois, truffle, and an orange hint. On the palate, there's a beautiful balance between crisp acidity and cool fruit, harmonious with a delicate yet intense minerality. It's not a big, dense wine, but one of exquisite balance and complexity, with the fruit still vibrant on the mid-palate, though subtly showing its age. This is truly 【a very beautiful old Romanée-Saint-Vivant, a true vin d'émotion】. Given its venerable age, this wine should be handled with utmost care. Expect the cork to be fragile; a Durand or Ah-So opener is highly recommended. Decanting is advisable to separate any sediment and allow the wine to breathe, but do so gently and just before serving to preserve its delicate aromas. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F). 🍴 This mature Grand Cru pairs wonderfully with braised or grilled game, classic Peking duck, or a rich mushroom risotto. For cheese, a creamy, intense Epoisses de Bourgogne would be a perfect match. 🥂 This wine is ideal for a momentous anniversary, a significant birthday celebration, or a contemplative tasting among connoisseurs. It's a rare opportunity to experience the grace and evolution of a well-aged 布根地 Grand Cru, perfect for creating unforgettable memories.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Sylvain Cathiard is a highly regarded family wine producer based in Côte de Nuits, Burgundy. Known for its sought-after, high-priced Pinot Noir wines, made from grapes sourced from First and Grand Cru vineyards in Vonn and surrounding appellations. The history of the winery begins with Sylvain’s grandfather, who started making wine in Burgundy in the 1930s. Later, descendants took over the winery and ran it until the 1980s. With approximately 5 hectares (12 acres) of vines, its most prestigious wines come from this Grand Cru vineyard, and its portfolio also includes several Grand Cru wines from Nuit-St-Georges and Vosne-Romanée.
