FEATURES
🏰 The 1989 vintage in Bordeaux was a warm and sunny year, marked by early harvests that produced wines with early charm and voluptuous fruit, with Merlot performing particularly well. It was considered part of a triumvirate of great vintages, yielding majestic wines, especially in Graves and Pomerol, known for their powerful, full-bodied reds. This Chateau Grand Corbin Despagne 1989, now gracefully aged, offers a unique glimpse into the past, showcasing complex red fruit and floral notes on the nose, evolving into spicy, truffle, violet, and cherry notes. On the palate, it's supported by the finesse and smoothness of velvety tannins, presenting a round, flamboyant, and very smooth profile that ages gracefully. While still capable of delivering immense pleasure, older wines can be delicate and may show signs of their age. 【A testament to the 1989 Bordeaux vintage's early charm and graceful aging potential, developing complex truffle notes.】 🍴 While specific pairings for this vintage are not detailed, Chateau Grand Corbin Despagne generally pairs well with classic meat dishes like beef and venison, as well as Asian dishes, rich fish courses like tuna, mushrooms, and pasta. 🥂 This venerable wine is perfect for celebrating significant anniversaries, milestone birthdays, or a contemplative evening for those who appreciate aged Bordeaux. Be mindful that older bottles may have fragile corks and capsules, requiring careful handling and a suitable corkscrew. To best appreciate its nuanced character, stand the bottle upright for at least 24-48 hours before serving to allow any sediment to settle. Decanting is recommended for about 30-60 minutes to gently aerate the wine and separate it from sediment, but be cautious not to over-decant very old wines as they can fade quickly. Serve at a slightly cool cellar temperature, around 15-16°C (59-61°F).
BACKGROUND
Chateau Grand Corbin Despagne is a Grand Cru Classe estate in the north of the Saint Emilion appellation in Bordeaux. The estate was founded by the Despagne family in 1812 and today remains family-owned. The Chateau Grand Corbin Despagne grand vin is a Merlot-predominant blend, with smaller quantities of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are harvested by hand from vines aged over 20 years old and later aged in 40 to 60 percent new oak barrels for between 12-18 months. Production of the grand vin totals approximately 70,000 to 100,000 bottles per year.
