🏰 The 1952 Château Cheval Blanc represents a truly rare and historic vintage from one of Bordeaux's most iconic First Growths. While the 1952 Bordeaux vintage was generally considered good, Cheval Blanc notably opted to favor freshness and fruit, resulting in a "finer wine" that was "wonderfully poised". At over 70 years old, this wine offers a unique glimpse into a bygone era of winemaking. Expect delicate tertiary aromas of dried fruit, leather, tobacco, forest floor, and subtle spice, with the fruit now very nuanced and ethereal. The structure will be soft, and the wine itself quite fragile, a testament to its incredible age. 【 A rare and historic vintage from one of Bordeaux's most iconic First Growths, offering a glimpse into a bygone era of winemaking. 】
🥂 This is a wine for a truly once-in-a-lifetime tasting, a very significant anniversary, or a collector's ultimate dream. It's an experience to be savored for its historical significance as much as its sensory delights.
**Serving Advice for a Grand Old Wine:**
Given its venerable age, this bottle requires utmost care. The cork and capsule may be fragile, so a specialized opener like a Durand or Ah-So is highly recommended. Stand the bottle upright for several days to allow any sediment to settle. Decant very gently, just before serving, only if there's significant sediment and the wine appears robust enough to handle aeration. Taste a small amount first, as very old wines can fade quickly with too much air. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F), to best appreciate its delicate nuances.
🍴 To honor its fragility and subtle complexity, pair this wine with simple, elegant dishes that won't overpower it. Think roasted poultry, mild game, delicate mushroom preparations, or aged, firm cheeses like Comté or Parmesan.
BACKGROUND
Chateau Cheval Blanc is a property in the Saint-Emilion region of Bordeaux, classified with the top ranking of Premier Grand Cru Classe A.The vineyard is located in the northwest of the region, bordering Pomerol – La Conseillante is a neighbor – and consists of 39 hectares (96 acres) divided into 45 plots. There is an unusually high amount of Cabernet Franc planted, about 49 percent, with 47 percent Merlot and 4 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The unusual planting proportions reflect the terroir; most vineyards in the region are either clay or gravel-based over impermeable sedimentary rock, but Cheval Blanc is unique in having a patchwork of soils with the two types in roughly equal proportions. The clay soils provide base wines with velvety tannins, while those from gravel soils are more aromatic and elegant.
