FEATURES
🏰 The 1953 vintage for Châteauneuf-du-Pape, while not extensively detailed in specific reports, would have produced wines that, if well-stored, offer a profound journey into the past. Chapoutier, a historic winery established in 1808, is renowned for crafting exceptional wines that express their terroir. The La Bernardine Rouge is typically an intense crimson-red wine with a complex and subtle nose of blackcurrant and plum, evolving into roasted coffee, cinnamon, cherry, and morello cherry. On the palate, it opens with spicy (licorice) and fruity aromas, offering a warm, rounded, and harmonious experience with juicy fruit tones, gentle spice, and silky tannins, leading to a long, polished finish. 🥂 This extremely rare and aged Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a magnificent choice for a very special, once-in-a-lifetime celebration, perhaps marking a significant historical event or a personal milestone from the mid-20th century. It’s a wine for contemplation and appreciation of history in a glass. Serving Advice: Given its considerable age, this wine demands utmost care. Old corks and capsules are likely very fragile; a Durand opener is highly recommended. Stand the bottle upright for several days or even a week to allow any sediment to settle completely. Decant very gently and slowly, just before serving, to separate the wine from the sediment, being careful not to over-aerate, which could cause delicate, aged aromas to dissipate. Serve at a cellar temperature of 16-18°C (60-64°F) in a wide red wine glass to allow its complex bouquet to unfold. 🍴 This classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape pairs beautifully with rich, flavorful dishes. Consider roasted or grilled red meats like lamb, beef, and game, as well as hearty stewed dishes such as daube provençale or boeuf bourguignon. It also complements rich vegetarian dishes like moussaka, and a variety of charcuterie and cheeses. 【A classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape from a historic producer, offering complex spicy and fruity aromas.】
BACKGROUND
Maison M. Chapoutier is one of the most recognizable producers in the Rhône Valley. It is known for its wines from both the north and south of the valley, but in particular for its red and white Hermitage wines, made from Syrah and a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne, respectively.Outside of the flagship vineyards in Hermitage, Chapoutier has vineyards across the Rhône, including plots in Côte Rôtie, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Condrieu. These span both single-vineyard expressions and generic AOC-level wines. Chapoutier also makes regional Côtes du Rhône wines, and has viticultural interests in Australia (Domaine Tournon), Portugal and Alsace.
