Nicolas Joly, Savennieres Clos De La Coulee De Serrant, 1993
🏰 The 1993 vintage in the Loire Valley was generally good, with some pleasant sweet wines produced, though many are now likely past their peak. The growing season began promisingly with good flowering, but late May rains brought mildew concerns. June was hot, and an early July hailstorm affected some vineyards. However, fine, warm, and dry weather returned until early September, helping to thicken grape skins. Nicolas Joly, a pioneer of biodynamic winemaking, crafts his Savennières Clos de la Coulée de Serrant to be a profound expression of Chenin Blanc. These wines are renowned for their intense minerality, honeyed notes, dried fruit, and often a distinctive oxidative character that develops beautifully with age, offering remarkable complexity, depth, and longevity. 【 An iconic biodynamic Chenin Blanc from a monopole vineyard, celebrated for its profound minerality and exceptional aging potential. 】
🍴 This mature Savennières pairs wonderfully with richer white meats like roasted pork or veal, creamy mushroom dishes, or strong, aged hard cheeses. Its unique character can also complement some subtly spiced Asian cuisines.
🥂 This wine is ideal for a contemplative tasting, a gathering of serious wine enthusiasts, or a special dinner where a unique, aged white wine is appreciated. Given its age, handle the bottle with extreme care, as old corks and capsules can be fragile. A two-pronged Ah-So opener is recommended. Decanting for a short period (30-60 minutes) can help it open up and express its tertiary aromas, but be mindful of its delicate nature. Serve at a cool cellar temperature (around 12-14°C or 54-57°F).
