🏰 【An outstanding second wine from Chateau Lagrange, a 3rd Classified Growth of Saint-Julien, from the legendary 1990 vintage, offering elegance, complexity, and beautiful maturity.】 The 1990 vintage in Bordeaux has a legendary reputation as one of the best of the late 20th Century, characterized by a hot period in late August and early September that allowed for full ripening and concentration. [23, 25, 27] Chateau Lagrange underwent significant improvements and investments in the 80s and 90s, contributing to the quality of this wine. [3] This elegant wine is fully mature, offering a complex, sweet, and tertiary blend of dark berries, espresso, sweet Cuban tobacco, woodsmoke, earth, and dark chocolate. It presents a lovely balance of blackberry and tobacco flavors with soft, silky tannins. Expect a perfect body, rich attack of fruit, creamy soft spiciness/oak, herbs like rosemary, and a strong mineral and perfumed blackcurrants finish, with hints of forest soil and light truffle. It still holds a nice ruby color with slight bricking on the edge. [3, 12, 16, 19]
🍴 Excellent with lamb, duck, game, chicken, rare grilled beef, aged Comte or Saint-Nectaire cheese, roasted game birds, and beef dishes. [1, 9, 21, 23]
🥂 A glorious and memorable wine, perfect for a special dinner or a significant celebration. It is fully mature and should be enjoyed now, though it can still hold. [3, 16, 19]
Serving Note: For this 1990 vintage, expect beautiful tertiary aromas and a softer tannin structure. It's advisable to check the cork condition carefully. Decant gently for about 30-60 minutes to allow it to breathe and shed any sediment, but be mindful not to over-decant very old wines. Serve at around 16-18°C (60-64°F).
