FEATURES
🏰The 2003 Chateau Leoville Poyferre is a colossal success from a brutally hot vintage, a testament to the winemakers' artistry, offering a sumptuous blend that defies the challenges of an overbearingly warm season. The 2003 vintage was notoriously hot, posing significant challenges for winemakers, yet Leoville Poyferre produced a spectacular wine. It's considered one of the big surprises and successes of the vintage, showcasing the resilience and acumen of the chateau. This Second Growth Bordeaux is just entering its plateau of full maturity and should remain for 10-15+ years. It has received high praise, including 96 points from Robert Parker. Exuding a rich garnet hue, the nose is redolent of ripe blackberries, cassis, chocolate, cigar box, spice, and smoke, with an earthy minerality. The palate is full-bodied, intense, and voluptuously textured, with opulent layers of cassis, smoky oak, and spices. It boasts sweet, rich, and silky tannins that unfold elegantly, leading to an exceptionally long and seamless finish. 🍴 Excellent with roasted meats or fowl, steak, eggplant parmesan, or richly flavored dishes. 🥂 A monumental wine perfect for a grand celebration, a serious wine tasting, or a luxurious dinner where it can be the star. This 2003 vintage is mature and drinking well, but still has significant aging potential. Decanting for 2-4 hours is highly recommended to allow its complex tertiary notes to fully develop. Serve at 18°C (64°F). Given its age, handle the cork and bottle with care.
BACKGROUND
Château Léoville Poyferré is an estate in the Saint-Julien appellation of the Médoc. It was rated a second growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, and was traditionally the softest of the three Léovilles. The 80-hectare (198-acre) vineyard is planted 65 percent to Cabernet Sauvignon with 25 percent Merlot, 8 percent Petit Verdot and 2 percent Cabernet Franc. The gravelly soils provide good drainage for the vines, which helps negate disease pressure and leads to concentrated fruit. In the winery, the grapes are cold-macerated for colour extract and aromatic purity, and fermented in stainless steel vats before aging. Château Léoville Poyferré is aged in oak barriques for 18 to 20 months, and the proportion of new oak has increases in the last few decades.
