🏰 The 1970 Chateau Monbousquet, a venerable Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé, offers a glimpse into a classic Bordeaux vintage. This mature red Bordeaux blend presents a 【scarlet bricky color】 and an inviting nose of 【cassis, red currant, Indian spice, earth, and spring florals】. On the palate, it's velvety with delicate yet precise layers of 【red currant, mocha, marionberry, smoke, and leather notes】, culminating in a feathery finish with echoes of red fruits and a hint of soy. Expect a wine that has evolved beautifully, showcasing the elegance of aged Bordeaux. Still offering good fruit with a long-lasting finish of smoke, pepper, and leather.
🍴 This classic Bordeaux pairs wonderfully with roasted meats, especially those with rich sauces like pomegranate, or traditional beef and venison dishes.
🥂 Perfect for a contemplative evening or a special gathering of wine enthusiasts who appreciate the nuances of a well-aged claret.
Serving: For a wine of this age, expect potential sediment; decanting is highly recommended to separate it and allow the wine to breathe gently. Serve at around 16-18°C (60-64°F). Be mindful of the cork and capsule, as they can be fragile with age. This old wine style offers a unique tasting experience, but set an expectation for its condition, which can vary with age.
BACKGROUND
Chateau Monbousquet is a property in Saint Emilion particularly known for its lush, ripe, modern-styled wines. Long regarded as an underachiever, quality has increased greatly in the past quarter century and the wines are now some of the best in the region. The estate comprises 32 hectares (79 acres) with all but a small parcel planted to red varieties in the proportion 60 percent Merlot, 30 percent Cabernet Franc, 10 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. As with Cheval Blanc and Figeac, the soils are largely gravelly, which suits the high proportion of Cabernets. The vineyard was completely redrained in 1993 when Gerard Perse purchased the property.
