FEATURES
🏰 The 2009 vintage in Bordeaux for Château Camensac was characterized by a damp start with persistent rain in April and May, followed by a very dry August and September. Despite this, the vines evolved without fail, with quick and steady flowering and homogeneous veraison. The summery climate extended until early October, allowing for consistent and optimal ripening. This 5th Classified Growth (Cinquième Grand Cru Classé) from Haut-Médoc is typically a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot, though some sources indicate 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard boasts a unique terroir with gravelly soil and a maritime climate, featuring Gunzian gravel (like Saint-Julien) and deep gravel, clay-gravel, and calcareous clay soils (found in Pessac-Léognan). The wine is aged in French oak barrels for 14 to 18 months, with 60% new barrels. The 2009 vintage is widely considered 【 one of the best wines from this 5th Classified Growth estate, showcasing the excellent 2009 Bordeaux vintage 】. It displays a dark and shining color. The nose is lively and expressive, releasing intense notes of red fruit and floral scents, often reinforced by old roses and very ripe sweet pepper. Aromas of plum fruit with subtle undertones of tobacco, damp undergrowth, and leafy nuances are also present. Other notes include violets, pink florals, ripe red berry fruits, plum, and cassis. The attack is frank, precise, and enveloping. The palate is supple and silky, unveiling tight and velvety tannins, and a rich and creamy aromatic structure. Medium-bodied with fine muscles and lovely flesh on the tongue. Flavors of black cherries, blackcurrants, and fresh plums lead to a spiced and long finish with notes of plums. Some describe dark plum and currant flavors laced with cocoa powder and roasted vanilla bean notes. 🍴 This mature Bordeaux pairs beautifully with roast beef, turkey, or lamb ragu. Classic pairings include Entrecote Bordelaise, roast duck, rack of lamb, beef tournedos with morels, or even a hot chocolate fondant. For a more diverse spread, consider grilled steak or roasted lamb, herb-roasted duck or chicken with a subtle berry reduction, wild mushroom risotto, hearty vegetable ratatouille, or venison with a light cherry compote. It also complements classic meat dishes, Asian dishes, hearty fish courses like tuna, mushrooms, pasta, and various cheeses such as aged Comté, Brie de Meaux, Camembert, and fresh goat's cheese. 🥂 With its excellent vintage and aging potential (until 2030), the 2009 Château Camensac is perfect for a formal dinner, a special family gathering, or a wine tasting focused on classic Bordeaux. It's a superb choice for pairing with rich meat dishes and makes a thoughtful gift for any Bordeaux enthusiast.
BACKGROUND
Chateau Camensac is a Bordeaux wine estate in the Haut-Medoc region, just over the border from Saint-Julien.The estate has around 75 hectares (185 acres) of vines with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot planted in an approximate 60:40 split. Vineyards are largely continguous; the railway line divides the main blocks from the "Lagrange" plots, which are adjacent to Château Lagrange in Saint-Julien. Soils are predominantly gravel (with a zone of sandy gravel) and planted to Cabernet Sauvignon; areas of chalky clay around the borders of the property are where most of the Merlot blocks are situated.
