Maison Leroy, Savigny Les Beaune Les Narbantons 1er Cru, 1991
🏰 The 1991 vintage in Burgundy was challenging but produced some surprisingly good wines, particularly from dedicated producers. Maison Leroy's Savigny-les-Beaune Les Narbantons 1er Cru 1991 is a rare find, representing 【a testament to the enduring quality and meticulous winemaking of Maison Leroy even in a less heralded vintage】. This red Burgundy, made from Pinot Noir, would have evolved significantly over three decades. Expect a complex bouquet of dried red fruits, forest floor, truffle, and savory notes, with hints of spice and aged leather. The palate, while likely showing its age, should still offer a delicate structure with resolved tannins and a lingering, earthy finish, reflecting the elegance of Savigny-les-Beaune with the added complexity of maturity.
🍴 Chinese Cantonese food pairing: This mature red Burgundy would be a fascinating pairing with Cantonese braised pigeon or a delicate steamed chicken with dried mushrooms, where its earthy and savory notes can complement the umami-rich dishes. It could also work with a light char siu (BBQ pork) or a mushroom and vegetable stir-fry. For a Western pairing, consider roasted game birds, mushroom pâté, or aged Gruyère cheese.
🥂 fit for event suggestion: A truly special bottle for a milestone anniversary, a contemplative tasting with fellow connoisseurs, or a unique gift for a Burgundy collector. This is an old wine, and its condition can vary. Expect an old-style wine with tertiary aromas and flavors. It's crucial to handle it with care. The cork and capsule are likely fragile, so a Durand opener or similar tool is highly recommended. Decanting should be done gently and just before serving to remove any sediment, but avoid excessive aeration which could diminish its delicate aromas. Serve at around 16-18°C (60-64°F) in appropriate glassware to appreciate its nuanced character. Set expectations for a wine that has gracefully aged, offering a glimpse into the past.
