Ghislaine Barthod, Chambolle Musigny Les Fuees 1er Cru, 1999
🏰 The 1999 Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle Musigny Les Fuees 1er Cru hails from a superb vintage for red Burgundy, a year that, despite a temperamental summer, delivered grapes of optimal maturity. Ghislaine Barthod is celebrated for emphasizing the finesse, elegance, and purity of fruit characteristic of Chambolle Musigny. This wine is a testament to the resilience and adaptability intrinsic to Burgundy's cherished parcels.
【Prepare for a drop-dead gorgeous Chambolle fruit profile, with intense black cherry, ripe red fruits like cherries and raspberries, complemented by dark berries and subtle hints of plum.】 The bouquet is seductive and complex, revealing spicy nuances of cloves, cinnamon, and vanilla, alongside earthy notes of undergrowth, a fine mineral component, and floral accents of violets and dried roses. The palate is elegant and harmonious, with fine, well-integrated tannins providing a silky yet structured texture, leading to a long and persistent finish. Some tasters note savory hints of Italian cured meats and bacon fat, adding to its complexity.
🍴 This exquisite red Burgundy pairs wonderfully with classic French cuisine such as roasted duck, coq au vin, mushroom risotto, or a delicate beef bourguignon. It also complements game birds and aged cheeses beautifully.
🥂 This wine is drinking beautifully now, but still possesses significant structure and aging potential, with some suggesting it will keep for another decade. For optimal enjoyment, it benefits from serious aeration; consider double decanting and allowing at least three hours to breathe. Expect an old-world style with evolving tertiary notes, and a gentle reminder that older corks and capsules require careful handling.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Ghislaine Barthod is one of the most prominent producers in the Chambolle-Musigny appellation of Burgundy, known for its intense, ageworthy wines from the Pinot Noir grape variety. The estate was founded by Marcel Noëllat in the early 20th century. Marcel's daughter married Gaston Barthod, an officer in the French army stationed in Dijon. They developed the domaine together over the decades. After Gaston's death in 1999, their daughter Ghislaine took over, having managed the estate for the previous decade. Ghislaine and her partner Louis Boillot combine vineyard work across their respective domaines, but the estates are run separately and the wines are produced in their respective wineries.
