FEATURES
🏰A legendary First Growth, the 1983 Chateau Haut-Brion, despite a challenging vintage, offers a complex and evolving profile of earthy, leathery notes, subtle spices, and classic aged Bordeaux characteristics, showcasing remarkable complexity and elegance at its peak. The 1983 Bordeaux vintage was generally very good, producing rich, generous wines, though many lacked structure for long-term aging. Haut-Brion demonstrated the superiority of Pessac-Leognan in this vintage. This wine is described as a somewhat controversial Haut-Brion, reaching full maturity quickly and showing signs of cracking up in some instances. It presents an earthy, melted asphalt, creosote-like nose intermixed with compost, decaying autumnal vegetation, and herb-tinged fruit. The palate is fleshy, medium-bodied, and relatively lush, though the garnet color may show considerable amber, and the finish can dry out. Other notes include subtle spices, classic aged Bordeaux notes of lead/pencil and cigar box, complexity, and elegance. An earthy, leathery bouquet, harmonious palate with citrus-tinged entry, sandalwood, cedar, truffle, and smoke are also noted. 🍴 Classic pairings for Bordeaux reds include steak (ribeye, entrecôte), roasted leg of lamb, duck confit, beef stew, and braised dishes. It also pairs well with hard cheeses like aged Comté, Gruyère, or aged Gouda, and charcuterie boards with cured meats. Leaner meats such as pork or duck, and mushroom risotto are also good options. 🥂 Ideal for a momentous celebration or a contemplative tasting, this mature Haut-Brion offers a profound experience for connoisseurs. As a mature 1983 vintage, this wine is likely at its peak, offering a complex and elegant experience. Be mindful of the cork and capsule, which may be fragile due to age. Decanting for a short period (around 30 minutes to an hour) is recommended to allow the wine to open up and separate from any sediment, but avoid over-decanting as older wines can fade quickly. Serve at 15.5 degrees Celsius (60 degrees Fahrenheit).
