🏰【A testament to its balance, elegance, and aging potential, the 1982 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape is a mature, generous, and charming wine from one of France's great estates.】 The 1982 vintage was a small vintage, a very hot, dry year with some "coulure" in spring. Beaucastel grows all thirteen grape varieties authorized by the appellation and has been organically grown since the sixties. The terroir is archetypal of the best in Châteauneuf: rolled pebbles on the surface, sand, clay, and limestone deeper down.
Tasting Note: Very pale garnet color. Delicately perfumed nose of underripe raspberries, tea leaves, dried blood, and an occasional whiff of a nearby horse. Palate is cherry, decayed leaves, leather, great savory balance. A lick of tannin and resonant acidity round out a palate that seems to gain in power. Light and elegant, nicely mature, a very pretty, feminine style of wine. Medium ruby color, some vegetal components, an attractive, earthy, spicy, black-pepper, and cherry-scented nose.
🍴 Hearty meat dishes. Also pairs well with lamb, steak frites.
🥂 A mature, generous, and charming wine, drinking surprisingly well. A pleasant wine to drink now. Serve at 15°C and if possible decant before serving. For older wines like this, expect some bottle variation and be mindful of the cork and capsule condition. Decanting for a short period (30 minutes to an hour) can help remove sediment and allow the wine to open up, but avoid over-decanting very old wines as they can fade quickly.
