🏰 The 1997 Ornellaia was once lauded by Robert Parker as 【probably the finest (and most sumptuous) Ornellaia yet produced】. This Bolgheri Superiore hails from an exceptional vintage with ideal ripening conditions and perfectly matured grapes, despite lower yields. It offers a dense purple color with smoky espresso and jammy black cherry aromas, wrapped in new oak. The palate is full-bodied, opulent, thick, and juicy, with low acidity and a seamless character. Expect intense blackberry, currant, fresh herb, and mineral notes, supported by ultrafine tannins and a long, caressing finish. James Suckling noted extraordinary aromas of prunes, licorice, and dried flowers with rosemary undertones, leading to a velvety texture. While some older reviews from 2012 suggested it might be drying out, more recent assessments (2015, 2026) indicate it can still offer a fantastic experience, showcasing complex tertiary aromas of dried fruits, leather, and earthy notes.
🍴 This mature Ornellaia is a magnificent partner for roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, venison, or slow-cooked meat dishes infused with aromatic herbs. It also pairs beautifully with beef short ribs and can even complement certain Asian dishes.
🥂 This wine is ready to be enjoyed now, having reached a beautiful stage of maturity. It was anticipated to drink well for 15+ years from its release, and still offers a rewarding experience. When opening, be mindful of the cork, which may be fragile due to age. Decanting is highly recommended to separate any potential sediment and allow the wine to breathe, fully expressing its aged bouquet. Serve slightly below room temperature, ideally between 16-18°C (60-64°F).
