FEATURES
🏰 The 2010 Michel & Stéphane Ogier Côte-Rôtie La Belle Helene is widely considered perfection, with Robert Parker himself suggesting it might be the greatest bottle of wine Stéphane Ogier has ever made. The 2010 vintage for the Rhône Valley was phenomenal for both reds and whites. Ogier demonstrated remarkable flexibility by cutting back barrel aging time from 32 months to 18 months in this vintage, adapting to the fruit's quality. This wine is produced from the Côte-Rozier vineyard and is only made in very good years, with a maximum of 2,100 bottles produced each vintage. It is a powerful, precise, pure, and poised wine, tannic, backward, concentrated, and mouth-filling, clearly not for current consumption. 【A perfect 100-point Côte-Rôtie, potentially Ogier's greatest creation】. It presents an inky/purple color. The nose offers notes of pen ink, graphite, forest floor, licorice, and abundant black and blue fruits. There is little evidence of new oak due to the extravagant richness and wealth of ripe fruit. On the palate, it is assertive and powerful, delivering mouth-filling red and dark plum fruits. It's sappy and stony, with long tannins pressing the finish deep. The tannins, acidity, alcohol, and wood are perfectly integrated into this exceptional wine. It needs time to unwind fully, with a core of fig, blackberry, and plum pâte de fruit notes held in check by smoldering tobacco and charcoal accents. 🍴 This bold and structured Côte-Rôtie demands equally robust food pairings. Think rich game dishes like venison or wild boar, slow-cooked lamb shanks, beef Wellington, or strong aged cheeses. Its smoky and meaty notes would also complement grilled prime rib or a hearty mushroom ragu. 🥂 This is a legendary wine for serious collectors and connoisseurs, ideal for a milestone celebration or a very special tasting event. It will benefit from 5-6 years of cellaring and can keep for 25-30+ years. Best from 2017 through 2035, with some suggesting it's in its prime drinking window from 2023-2043. Decanting for several hours is highly recommended to allow its complex layers to emerge.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Stéphane Ogier is a producer in the northern Rhône appellation of Côte Rôtie, France. It is especially well known for varietal Syrah from several highly regarded appellations in the region, but also making small amounts of Viognier from Condrieu and red and white Vin de Pays wine. The domaine was formed by Michel Ogier who had been growing grapes in the village of Ampuis in Côte Rôtie and selling them. Michel's son Stéphane began working at the winery in 1998. The estate had gone by Domaine Michel Ogier, but new vintages now commonly say either Domaine Michel et Stephane Ogier or M&S Ogier d'Ampuis.
