FEATURES
🏰 The 1970 vintage was a highlight year for Bordeaux, especially notable in an otherwise generally weaker decade. A late spring was followed by a beautiful June and well-timed summer showers, contributing to excellent grape ripening. Château Léoville Las Cases 1970 is described as a mature and well-balanced wine, revealing notes of red berries, cedar, lead pencil, and a delicate hint of smoke. Its complex aromatic profile can include dark fruit, black pepper, cedar, forest floor, leather, violet, plum, blackcurrant, savory notes, blueberry, and dark chocolate. On the palate, it is often full-bodied and intense, with firm tannins and a long finish. Some tasters have found a seductive, smoky, and hypnotically fragrant nose with crushed raspberry puree, gentle blackberry fruit, white pepper, soft leather, and soy. While some bottles are still charming and vibrant, others might show signs of being slightly past their peak or drying out. 【A legendary Second Growth from a highlight Bordeaux vintage, still showing remarkable complexity and charm after decades】. 🍴 This venerable Bordeaux pairs exquisitely with classic red meats, game, and strong, aged cheeses. Consider roasted lamb, beef Wellington, venison, or a rich mushroom risotto. 🥂 This is a truly special occasion wine, a "golden oldie" that is fully mature. Given its age, handle with utmost care. Old corks can be fragile, so using a Durand or an Ah-So opener is highly recommended. Decanting is advisable to separate any sediment and allow the wine to breathe, but be cautious; a short decant (30-60 minutes) might be sufficient to awaken its delicate aromas without causing it to fade. Serve at a cool cellar temperature, around 16-17°C (60-63°F). Be prepared for potential variability in older bottles.
BACKGROUND
Château Léoville-Las Cases is an estate in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux, ranked as a second growth in the 1855 Classification of the Médoc and Graves. The estate has a history dating back to the mid-17th century, when it used to be part of a much larger estate. There are 98 hectares (242 acres) of vineyards, planted with 66 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 24 percent Merlot, 9 percent Cabernet Franc and 1 percent Petit Verdot. The vineyard's soils are mostly gravel over sand and clay, with some areas where the clay reaches the surface. The proximity of the Gironde moderates weather extremes, lowering the risk of frost and allowing grapes to ripen earlier than vineyards further inland. The vines are on average 40 years old.
