FEATURES
🏰 The 1985 Bordeaux vintage is widely celebrated as an 【absolute stand-out, a vintage of the decade】. While not a vintage of immense power, it is renowned for its elegance, roundness, and polished character, offering a harmonious charm that few years can match. The growing season saw a challenging start with winter frosts and a cold, wet spring, followed by hail in May and June. However, hot weather arrived in time for flowering, and a hot, record-breakingly dry September proved ideal for ripening, particularly benefiting Merlot. This led to many reds being elegant and exquisitely balanced. Pomerol and Saint-Émilion performed exceptionally well, showcasing a marvellous combination of concentration and finesse. This mature Bordeaux offers a complex bouquet of cassis, graphite, leather, and cedar wood, with a wonderful texture and finely polished tannins. The palate is supple, soft, and fruity, revealing a delightful interplay of fruit spice and balanced acidity. Expect a wine that is mellow and suave, with considerable finesse, reflecting the classic old-world style where elegance triumphs over sheer power. 🥂 This venerable 1985 Chateau La Couspaude is perfectly suited for a truly special occasion, perhaps an anniversary or a significant milestone celebration, where its mature character can be fully appreciated. It's also a magnificent choice for an intimate dinner with fellow wine enthusiasts who cherish the nuances of aged Bordeaux. Serving Advice for this Aged Treasure: Given its age, this wine should be handled with care. Expect the cork to be fragile, so use a Durand or an Ah-So opener. Decant gently to separate any sediment that has formed over the decades, allowing the wine to breathe for 30-60 minutes, but be mindful not to over-aerate, as very old wines can fade quickly. Serve at a cellar temperature of 16-18°C (60-64°F) to best express its delicate aromas and flavors. 🍴 For food pairings, consider classic French cuisine that complements its refined profile. Think roasted lamb with herbs, a delicate beef tenderloin, or slow-cooked duck confit. Earthy mushroom dishes or aged, hard cheeses would also create a sublime match.
BACKGROUND
Chateau La Couspaude is a wine producer located on the limestone plateau just outside the village of Saint Emilion.Chateau La Couspaude is typically a blend of 75 percent Merlot, 20 percent Cabernet Franc and 5 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines, averaging 30 years old, are picked by hand and the grapes fermented in small wooden vats. Malolactic fermentation then takes place in new French oak barrels, before the wine is barrel-aged for 18–20 months.
