FEATURES
🏰 The 1981 vintage for Burgundy was far from brilliant, marked by severe frosts in late April and hail in July, which significantly reduced yields and impacted quality, especially for red wines. Red wines from this vintage were often described as thin and dilute, lacking fruit and balance in their youth. However, some of the best Grand Cru vineyards managed to escape with less damage. Romanée Saint-Vivant Grand Cru, a prestigious appellation, would have been made from Pinot Noir, and while the vintage was challenging, a well-preserved bottle from a top producer like Charles Noellat could still offer a unique historical experience. 【 Historical Grand Cru rarity 】 🥂 This extremely rare 1981 Charles Noellat Romanée Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is a collector's item, best suited for a profound tasting experience among very few, highly appreciative connoisseurs. It's a testament to Burgundy's history and the resilience of its terroir, even in difficult years. Serving Advice for this venerable bottle: Given its extreme age and the challenging vintage, approach with utmost care. The cork and capsule will be very fragile; a Durand opener is highly recommended. Stand the bottle upright for at least a week to allow any sediment to settle completely. Decanting should be done very gently and quickly, just enough to separate the wine from sediment, or consider pouring directly from the bottle with a careful hand. Serve at a cool cellar temperature of 14-16°C (57-61°F). 🍴 If the wine has survived gracefully, pair it with very delicate and simple dishes that will not overwhelm its fragile character. Think subtle preparations of roasted squab or guinea fowl, a light mushroom consommé, or very mild, aged cheeses. Avoid anything rich, heavy, or highly spiced.
BACKGROUND
Charles Noëllat is the current wine merchant brand in the Côte de Nuits sub-region of Burgundy. The few original wines left are very sought-after and very rare. The Noëllat family has a long history of wine production in Vosne-Romanée, started in the early 20th century by brothers Charles and Ernest. Descendants of Charles and Ernest are winemakers at Domaine Georges Noëllat and Domaine Michel Noëllat et Fils respectively.
