FEATURES
🏰Niepoort Batuta 2019 is a supremely well-crafted Douro red, praised for its 【elegance, finesse, and impressive definition】, often mistaken for a fine Volnay in blind tastings. The 2019 vintage in the Douro Valley was characterized by a dry climate with mild days and cool nights in August, leading to slow and balanced ripening and healthy grapes. Batuta is made from 70 to 100-year-old vines, including Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Rufete, and Malvazia Preta, grown on schist soils. Niepoort aims for elegance and longevity in their Douro wines, pioneering a "light" Douro winemaking style.
This wine offers a very perfumed and ethereal nose, with a yin-and-yang of high-tone lift and an earthy bass note. Expect 【fresh black and blue fruits mingling with delicate violets, bitter chocolate, crushed coriander seed, and fresh pencil shavings (aromatized cedar and graphite)】. The palate is young, precise, and structured, with elegant, sluicing acidity, ultra-fine tannins, and a long, persistent, spicy finish.
🍴 Batuta is very versatile, pairing well with meats and fish such as monkfish, squid, or roasted octopus. Rich, earthy, intense Douro reds demand rich, earthy meats like venison, wild boar, or roasted/stewed beef. It also complements goat's cheese, old Gouda, or Stilton.
🥂 An excellent choice for a sophisticated dinner party, a special occasion celebrating Portuguese cuisine, or a serious wine tasting focusing on elegant reds. It's a wine that promises to age gracefully.
Decanting is recommended one hour in advance. Serve at 16-18°C (60-64°F).
