FEATURES
🏰 The 1983 vintage in Burgundy was a mixed bag, marked by an early spring, hail, and September rains, which led to challenges with rot. However, strict grape sorting during harvest allowed quality berries to shine, and the red wines, particularly from the Côte de Nuits, have developed structure and excellent length over time. Gevrey-Chambertin, however, faced significant issues with rot in this vintage. Despite the difficulties, the best examples from this year can still be brilliant, though they are far fewer in number than in other vintages. 【 Rarity of a challenging vintage 】 This 1983 Maison Leroy Gevrey Chambertin, if well-preserved, offers a glimpse into a bygone era of Burgundy winemaking. Expect a wine that has evolved significantly, likely showcasing tertiary aromas of smoky herbs, earth, licorice, and dark fruits. The palate, while perhaps not possessing the genius of a truly great vintage, can still be rich, long, and savory, with an elegant and complex fragrance. 🥂 This wine is perfect for a very special, intimate gathering of seasoned wine enthusiasts who appreciate the nuances and history of aged Burgundy. It's a contemplative wine, ideal for a quiet evening rather than a boisterous celebration. Serving Advice for this venerable bottle: Given its age, extreme care is paramount. The cork and capsule may be fragile, so use a Durand opener or a two-pronged ah-so cork puller. Stand the bottle upright for several days before serving to allow any sediment to settle. Decanting is recommended for about 30-60 minutes to gently aerate the wine and separate it from sediment, but be mindful of its fragility – over-decanting could diminish its delicate aromas. Serve at a cellar temperature of 14-16°C (57-61°F). 🍴 Pair this mature Gevrey Chambertin with classic, refined dishes that won't overpower its delicate character. Think roasted fowl like duck or guinea fowl, mushroom-based dishes, or a simple, aged Comté cheese. Avoid strong sauces or highly spiced foods.
