Rene Engel, Vosne Romanee Les Brulees 1er Cru, 2002
🏰 The 2002 vintage for red Burgundy, particularly in the Côte de Nuits, was widely celebrated for producing wines of elegance, purity, and precision, rather than sheer power. These wines, though not considered among the greatest in terms of weight, have aged gracefully, retaining freshness and charm. The Domaine René Engel Vosne-Romanée Les Brûlées 1er Cru 2002 is a testament to this, offering a complex and evolving profile. Expect captivating sweet red fruit aromas, often leaning towards raspberry and cherry, intertwined with floral notes of peony and rose petal, and a delicate spice. Earthy, mineral undertones and fine, lively tannins contribute to its sophisticated structure and long, perfumed finish. Some tasters have noted hints of tomato leaf or a gamey character, adding to its complexity. 【A highly sought-after wine from a defunct, legendary estate】. The Les Brûlées vineyard itself is renowned as one of Burgundy's most outstanding Premier Crus, with certain sections showing Grand Cru potential. This wine is currently at its peak or will continue to evolve beautifully over the next few years.
🍴 This elegant Pinot Noir pairs exquisitely with classic Burgundian fare. Think roasted duck, pan-seared foie gras, or delicate game birds like pheasant or quail. For a more Eastern touch, consider Cantonese roast goose or a subtly spiced Peking duck.
🥂 This is a wine for special occasions and intimate gatherings, perfect for celebrating milestones or enjoying a quiet evening with fellow connoisseurs. It's an ideal choice for a serious wine tasting or a celebratory dinner. Given its age, it's advisable to stand the bottle upright for a day or two before serving to allow any sediment to settle. Decant gently for 1-2 hours to allow its complex aromatics to fully unfold, and serve at a cellar temperature of 16-18°C (60-64°F). Be mindful of the older cork and capsule when opening.
