🏰 The 2011 Chateau Calon Segur is a highly regarded Bordeaux, celebrated for its 【charm, harmony, and elegance】, standing out in a challenging vintage. This Saint-Estephe Grand Cru, with its iconic heart label, is a blend predominantly of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and a small percentage of Petit Verdot. The 2011 vintage was particularly favorable for Calon Segur, as the estate was largely untouched by hail and benefited from the colder clay soils retaining humidity during the arid growing season, allowing Cabernet to mature beautifully. Expect a dense ruby/purple color, with sweet cassis and black cherry fruit intermixed with hints of earth, oak, and spice. The palate offers a pure mouthfeel, lovely integrated tannins, and a polished, fine finish, with notes of blackberries, spices, and plums.
🍴 This classic claret is a superb partner for traditional French and Western cuisine. It pairs wonderfully with beef and venison dishes, roasted lamb, or garlic roasted pork shoulder. Consider a minced veal and white asparagus with sauce gribiche, accompanied by a confit prune in red wine for a refined pairing. Its structure also complements mature and hard cheeses.
🥂 An excellent choice for a sophisticated dinner party, a special family gathering, or a quiet evening to appreciate a well-aged Bordeaux. The 2011 Calon Segur is drinking beautifully now and is expected to evolve gracefully for another decade or more, with some critics suggesting a drinking window extending to 2038. Decanting for 1-2 hours is recommended to allow its complex aromas and flavors to fully develop. Ensure proper storage and handle the cork and capsule with care due to its age.
BACKGROUND
Château Calon-Ségur is an estate located in the commune of Saint-Estèphe on the left bank of the Gironde River in Bordeaux, which was rated as a third growth in the 1855 Classification of the Medoc and Graves. Calon-Ségur's vineyards are planted on clay and gravel soil, giving the finished wines power and finesse. While Cabernet Sauvignon is dominant in the wines, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are planted as well, providing blending opportunities. The grand vin is aged in new oak, fined with egg whites and produced in relatively small quantities – 80,000 bottles – every year.
