🏰 From the revered, now defunct, Domaine Rene Engel, the Vosne Romanee 1998 is a rare find, offering 【a mature and complex expression of this iconic Burgundy appellation】. The 1998 vintage in Burgundy, particularly for Pinot Noir, produced wines with good depth and structure. This wine, at over two decades old, reveals a bouquet of roasted red fruits, tobacco, underbrush, and sweet Vosne spice. The palate is concentrated with red and black fruits, supported by mouthwatering acidity and fine, slightly grainy tannins that have softened with age, leading to a long and evolving finish. While some bottles may show more resolved tannins, others might still present a firmer structure.
🍴 This mature Vosne-Romanée is a sublime partner for refined dishes. Think roasted venison with berry reduction, truffle-infused poultry, or a rich mushroom pâté. For an elegant Asian pairing, consider Cantonese braised goose or a delicate Peking duck.
🥂 Ideal for a milestone anniversary, a special birthday for a Burgundy enthusiast, or a contemplative tasting among serious collectors.
*Serving old wines requires care. The cork may be fragile, so use a Durand or an Ah-So opener. Decant gently to separate any sediment, allowing the wine to breathe for 30-60 minutes to fully express its aged complexities.*
BACKGROUND
Domaine René Engel was a Burgundy producer known for making some of the top examples of Pinot Noir in Vosne-Romanée, France. The domaine remained in the Engel family for three generations until the death of Philippe Engel in 2005. The domaine's vineyard holdings spanned a total of around six hectares. In 2006, René Engel's vineyard holdings were purchased by François Pinault, owner of the renowned Château Latour, and Domaine d'Eugenie was formed.
