FEATURES
🏰 The 1983 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru from Charles Noellat, though a product of a challenging Burgundy vintage, showcases the resilience and potential for excellence from this renowned terroir. The 1983 vintage in Burgundy was a mixed bag, with a difficult spring and summer rains causing rot, but a warm September helped concentrate the grapes. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC), which now owns the Romanée-Saint-Vivant vineyard, famously instructed pickers to meticulously select only healthy grapes, resulting in splendidly concentrated, rich wines. Expect a notably ripe and expressive nose combining secondary and tertiary aromas, liberally laced with spice, floral, and soft Asian tea-like notes. On the palate, it offers good density and richness, with medium-bodied flavors and a complex finish, not overly tannic for the vintage. 🍴 This mature Grand Cru Pinot Noir, with its complex aromatic profile and evolving structure, would be an exceptional pairing for classic French cuisine. Consider dishes like roasted squab with truffle sauce, coq au vin, or a delicate beef bourguignon. For a more refined experience, try it with pan-seared foie gras or a mushroom risotto. The wine's tertiary notes would also complement aged hard cheeses. 🥂 This is a wine for a truly special occasion, perhaps a significant anniversary or a gathering of serious wine connoisseurs who appreciate the nuances of aged Burgundy. It's a contemplative wine, best enjoyed in a quiet setting where its evolving complexities can be fully savored. Given its age, it's a rare treat that speaks of history and meticulous winemaking. Serving an older vintage like this 1983 requires care. The cork may be fragile, so use a Durand opener or an Ah-So. Decanting is recommended to allow the wine to breathe and to separate any sediment, but do so gently and just before serving to preserve its delicate aromas. Serve at cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F), in large Burgundy glasses to fully appreciate its bouquet. Be prepared for potential bottle variation, as is common with very old wines, but a well-preserved bottle can offer an unforgettable experience.
BACKGROUND
Charles Noëllat is the current wine merchant brand in the Côte de Nuits sub-region of Burgundy. The few original wines left are very sought-after and very rare. The Noëllat family has a long history of wine production in Vosne-Romanée, started in the early 20th century by brothers Charles and Ernest. Descendants of Charles and Ernest are winemakers at Domaine Georges Noëllat and Domaine Michel Noëllat et Fils respectively.
