🏰【A well-aged 4th Grand Cru Classé Bordeaux from a "lesser" vintage that defies expectations】, the 1993 Chateau Saint Pierre is still drinking beautifully. Despite 1993 being considered a challenging year, well-stored examples show remarkable longevity. This Saint-Julien gem, reformed in 1982 by Henri Martin, is a true representative of its appellation. Expect a deep garnet hue with notes of desiccated black fruit like cassis and blackberries, intertwined with hints of celery, tobacco, green bell pepper, forest floor, and baking spices. The palate is dry with integrated tannins and a pleasant acidity, revealing red berry and cherry character, with some toasty and smoky undertones.
🍴 This mature Bordeaux pairs wonderfully with classic French dishes such as steak frites or Beef Wellington. It also complements rich venison or a robust Dexter bone-in-sirloin. For a cheese course, consider a British Lincolnshire Poacher.
🥂 This wine is drinking well now and is expected to continue to do so through 2028, making it perfect for a classic dinner or for those who appreciate the nuanced evolution of a mature Bordeaux.
BACKGROUND
Château Saint-Pierre in Saint-Julien is a Left Bank Bordeaux estate classed as a Fourth Growth in the 1855 classification of the Médoc and Graves. The modern vineyard is 17 hectares (42 acres) planted 75 percent to Cabernet Sauvignon, 15 percent to Merlot and 10 percent to Cabernet Franc. Once harvested, the grapes are actually vinified in the chai of Château Gloria. The wine spends 14-16 months in barrels depending on the vintage, of which half is commonly new French oak.
