【A rare, exquisite 1990 Maury from L'Archiviste, a Vin Doux Naturel renowned for its exceptional age-worthiness and complex oxidative notes.】 Maury is a French appellation in Roussillon producing Vin Doux Naturel (VDN), fortified wines with high natural sugars, primarily from Grenache Noir. L'Archiviste specializes in rare, aged sweet wines designed for long-term aging, often regarded as collectible "antique" sweet wines. The 1990 vintage has undergone long oxidative barrel aging, giving it a beautiful mahogany color. The cooperative cellar L'Archiviste is known for conserving a barrel of each vintage since the mid-1970s. This rich and powerful sweet wine has notes of mocha, caramelized nuts, and honey, smoothly balanced with some acidity. The aging process often produces intense yet complex flavor profiles with notes of caramel and dried fruit. Its color ranges from dense, deep ruby to orange mahogany, even tile. The nose is intense, marked by morello cherry, blackberry, and red berries, evolving with age to notes of prunes, candied fruit, dried fruit, wax, spices, roasting, cocoa, coffee, leather, and nuts. Specifically, the 1990 is appreciated for its kirsch of cherries and brandy, enhanced by sweet spices like cardamom and fresh notes of menthol.

The magical pairing for this wine is dark chocolate. It is also excellent with foie gras, duck, and strong blue cheeses. For dessert, it pairs well with chocolate desserts, fresh fruit, tarts, creamy desserts, and cakes. Dried fruit cakes (fig, walnut, hazelnut) and candied fruits are a hit with old red VDNs. It can also complement spicy or sweet and sour dishes.

As a fortified wine, this 1990 Maury is expected to show remarkable age-worthiness and complex tertiary aromas. The cork and capsule should be handled with care due to its age. Decanting is recommended to appreciate its full spectrum of flavors and to remove any potential sediment.
