🏰 The 1994 Chateau Angelus, a fascinating vintage from the prestigious Saint-Émilion appellation, impresses with its accessible drinkability and appealing finesse, offering a wonderful experience when enjoyed at the right time. The 1994 vintage in Bordeaux, after a mild winter, saw heavy rain and frost in spring, followed by a stormy start to summer. However, the weather calmed down and became very favorable for the latter part of the vintage, with harvest taking place in good conditions, resulting in moderately good wines. Chateau Angelus was promoted to 1er Grand Cru Classé status in 1996 and has been ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) since 2012. Despite 1994 not being a "special vintage," this Angelus was a standout, showing it's at its peak but not past it.
👃 On the nose, it reveals a charming palette of red fruits like strawberries and raspberries, mingling with subtle hints of dried herbs, tobacco leaves, licorice, and an elegant floral background. It also offers heavenly scents of smoked meats, barbeque spices, hickory wood, cassis, and kirsch liqueur. The palate presents a refreshing vibrancy and pleasant structure, with soft and supple tannins. Dark berries and cherries dominate, supported by subtle acidity, with nuances of spice and cedar wood. It has a velvety mouthfeel, solid full mouth taste, and a long finish, with earth notes, herbal tastes, and chocolate.
🍴 Pairs well with poultry, lamb, and beef. Its richness and structure would also complement grass-fed NY strip steaks.
🥂 Ideal for a celebratory dinner or a gathering of wine enthusiasts, especially for those who appreciate a mature Saint-Émilion that is drinking beautifully now. It's a wine that can offer a wonderful experience and reflect the uniqueness of its vintage.
