FEATURES
🏰 The 1998 Chateau Pape Clement is a truly prodigious effort, boasting a dense ruby/purple color and a terrific nose of charcoal, blackberries, cassis, tobacco, minerals, and spice. This brilliantly-focused, medium to full-bodied Bordeaux already reveals a boatload of complexity and a remarkably long finish. Critics have praised its amazing nose of sweet tobacco, orange peel, cigar box, and exotic fruit, with lots of tar. The palate is full-bodied, with exotic and spicy flavors that are slightly decadent and funky, yet wild and wonderful, from leather to dried fruits. Robert Parker rated it 93 points, with an anticipated maturity of 2003-2025, while Wine Spectator gave it 95 points, suggesting it's best after 2013. Despite its age, some notes indicate it can still show a very dark purple color with little oxidation, suggesting excellent longevity.
🍴 This mature Bordeaux is a superb match for hearty dishes like grilled steak, especially when smoked with hickory chips, as the wine's integrated tannins and rich fruit complement the meat beautifully. It also pairs well with lamb chops, game, and other rich, savory red meat dishes. The wine's complexity and earthy notes would also be excellent with truffle-based dishes or aged hard cheeses.
🥂 Ideal for a celebratory dinner or a special occasion, particularly for those who appreciate the elegance and complexity of aged Bordeaux. This wine is at a beautiful plateau of maturity, offering a captivating experience. When serving older vintages like this, be mindful of the cork and capsule, which may be fragile. Decanting for a few hours is often recommended to allow the wine to breathe and fully express its evolved aromas and flavors, but be cautious with very old wines as excessive aeration can diminish delicate nuances. Serve at around 16-18°C (60-64°F).
