FEATURES
🏰 The 2001 Château Angélus is considered a "sleeper of the vintage," somewhat underrated after the highly acclaimed 2000, yet it offers a plush, sexy, and succulent style. This vintage is on a faster evolutionary track than the 2000, having shed much of its tannin and appearing more evolved and open-knit. Robert Parker praised it as a "brilliant performance" by Hubert de Boüard, noting its elegance, medium-bodied richness, and measured ripeness. It has entered its plateau of maturity and is expected to remain there for at least another 10-15 years.
This Angélus displays a dense plum/purple color. The nose is very fresh and mint-tinged, with fine delineation, offering dark cherries, Dorset plum, and orange peel, alongside notes of creosote, charcoal, blackberries, cassis, and espresso roast. The oak is gradually melting into the fabric of the wine. On the palate, it is lush, voluptuously textured, and opulent, with flavors of chocolate, blueberry, and blackberry fruit. It presents grainy tannins and melted red fruit mixed with tar, tobacco, and spice, with a lovely balance and excellent length. It's a thoroughly enjoyable 2001, drinking beautifully now but set to continue its evolution for another decade or so. 【A brilliant performance and a major sleeper of the vintage, offering plush and succulent style.】
Serving Advice for an Older Vintage (2001):
For a wine of this age, handle the bottle with care to avoid disturbing any sediment. Stand it upright for at least 24-48 hours before serving. Decanting is recommended for 1-2 hours to allow the wine to breathe and separate from sediment, but be mindful of its age; older wines can be fragile. Use a good quality corkscrew to prevent cork breakage. Serve at cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F).
🍴 This mature Bordeaux pairs exquisitely with classic French cuisine. Consider roasted game birds like duck or pheasant, beef tenderloin, lamb chops, or dishes featuring truffles and mushrooms. Hard, aged cheeses would also be a delightful accompaniment.
🥂 The 2001 Château Angélus is perfect for a significant anniversary, a milestone birthday celebration, or a sophisticated dinner party where a mature, complex, and elegant red Bordeaux is desired. It's a testament to the longevity and grace of fine Saint-Émilion wines.
