🏰 This 1967 Chateau Calon Segur is a rare find from a Bordeaux vintage often described as a "standard" year, yet Robert Parker lauded this particular wine for its "rich, soft, supple, and deeply fruity" character, outperforming its 1966 sibling for years. Expect a captivating bouquet of 【cigar box, lovely tobacco, and leather notes】, with a palate that, while showing some initial austerity, opens up to reveal these classic aged characteristics and a surprisingly long finish. While many 1967 reds are considered past their peak, this bottle offers a unique glimpse into a bygone era of Bordeaux winemaking.
🍴 This venerable Bordeaux red pairs beautifully with classic meat dishes like plain roast lamb, venison, or simply prepared game birds. Earthy mushroom dishes or aged hard cheeses would also complement its tertiary notes. Avoid heavy sauces to let the wine's delicate remaining character shine.
🥂 Perfect for a milestone anniversary, especially for someone celebrating a 1967 birth year, or a contemplative evening with fellow wine enthusiasts who appreciate the historical charm and evolution of aged Bordeaux. It's a journey back to the "Summer of Love" vintage.
Serving suggestion: Given its age, handle with care, as the cork and capsule may be fragile. Decanting gently to remove sediment is recommended, but be mindful not to over-aerate, as very old wines can fade quickly. Serve at a cool cellar temperature of 15.5°C (60°F) to preserve its freshness and lift.
BACKGROUND
Château Calon-Ségur is an estate located in the commune of Saint-Estèphe on the left bank of the Gironde River in Bordeaux, which was rated as a third growth in the 1855 Classification of the Medoc and Graves. Calon-Ségur's vineyards are planted on clay and gravel soil, giving the finished wines power and finesse. While Cabernet Sauvignon is dominant in the wines, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are planted as well, providing blending opportunities. The grand vin is aged in new oak, fined with egg whites and produced in relatively small quantities – 80,000 bottles – every year.
