🏰 The 1990 Chateau Calon Segur is a 【fully mature and charming Saint-Estèphe】, showcasing a beautiful core of sweet fruit and complex tertiary notes. This vintage, while perhaps not as concentrated as some later years, offers a sensual and appealing character, reflecting its full maturity. Calon Ségur, a Third Growth in the 1855 Classification, is renowned for its authentic, soul-stirring wines that balance delicacy with intensity and possess extraordinary aging potential.
🍴 This mature Bordeaux red is ideal with classic pairings such as roasted beef, lamb, venison, or other game meats. Its evolved character also complements dishes with truffles, earthy mushroom preparations, and aged hard cheeses.
🥂 This wine is likely at its peak or gently declining, making it perfect for immediate enjoyment at a special dinner or a gathering of Bordeaux enthusiasts. It's a testament to the longevity of fine Saint-Estèphe.
For a 1990 vintage, handle with care as the cork may be fragile. Decant gently to remove any sediment. Allow 1-2 hours of breathing time, but monitor its evolution closely as very old wines can sometimes fade quickly. Serve at cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F). Ensure the capsule is intact and check for any signs of seepage before opening.
BACKGROUND
Château Calon-Ségur is an estate located in the commune of Saint-Estèphe on the left bank of the Gironde River in Bordeaux, which was rated as a third growth in the 1855 Classification of the Medoc and Graves. Calon-Ségur's vineyards are planted on clay and gravel soil, giving the finished wines power and finesse. While Cabernet Sauvignon is dominant in the wines, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are planted as well, providing blending opportunities. The grand vin is aged in new oak, fined with egg whites and produced in relatively small quantities – 80,000 bottles – every year.
