🏰 【A lovely and charming Pauillac from a fruit-driven vintage, offering evolved complexities and harmonious refinement】. The 1985 Chateau Pichon Baron emerged from a vintage of buxom, fruit-driven wines with abundant soft tannins, and was the first vintage made by technical director Jean-Rene Matignon. The nose offers red fruit, cherries, underwood, a hint of juniper, dark cherry, plum, wet leaves, and mushrooms. Expect some minerality and "animal cage" notes. The palate is medium-bodied with a bit of caramel/burnt sugar flavor, plums, dark cherries, and earth. It's described as lovely and charming, if a touch rustic, with fun red fruits, earth, and cassis, and a surprising amount of tannin. Cedar wood, tobacco, lead pencil, and hints of red, smoky fruit are also present.
🍴 Best enjoyed with classic meat dishes like beef, lamb, and game.
🥂 Fully mature and requires drinking, offering a very enjoyable experience.
Kindly reminder: For a vintage this old, the condition is paramount, relying heavily on the bottle, cork, and provenance. Expect subtle, evolved flavors and a delicate structure. Be mindful of the cork and capsule condition when opening.
